I love everything about putting together a boho outfit. The long flowy dresses, the headbands, the John Lennon glasses, the whole hippie look. It’s definitely a great style for this time of year considering summer is right around the corner. Here’s some outfits I put together to show you the way I see bohemian fashion.

The show is a two fold event. One part are vendor areas where visitors can visit with company reps, play around with new gear and make purchases from the local stores present on the expo grounds (I saw Samy’s, Tuttle, and Paul’s Photo). The second portion consisted of educational seminars and photo ops directed by a variety of industry pros.

I visited the guys over at camnexus who were showing off their latest wireless tethering products. The camnexus is a device that hooks up to your camera’s USB port and is able to transfer images via local wifi network as well as being able to create it’s own wifi network. The device comes with it’s own rechargeable lithium battery which is nice since you won’t have an extra drain on your camera. It currently tethers to OSX, iOS, and the Android platform with Windows compatibility due soon. All this will set you back $299.

The unit is rather large but it has a shoe mount which comes in handy if you’re shooting with a trigger system that also has a shoe mount like the Pocketwizard FlexTT5s or MiniTT1. I was told by the guys in the booth that a new version is due out soon which will improve on the current model on all grounds as well as coming in at a more manageable size.

I then wandered to the Rose Photo full service photo lab where they had many of their products on display. Their rep was very helpful as I inquired about canvas print so I wanted to give them a quick shoutout.

Sigma was also present touting their new Art series lenses. I recently reviewed the 35mm 1.4 from Sigma which was a dynamite lens. Owning both the 85mm 1.4 and the 50-150mm 2.8 you can say I’m starting to become a Sigma fanboy. I also got to play with the 150mm 2.8 macro lens which is something I’m shopping for currently.

Lastly I went over to the main Samy’s booth where a Fujifilm rep was there with the latest from Fuji cameras including the x100s. I’ll be renting that camera for my next “3 weeks” review so if you’ve had your eye on it stay tuned for a totally unscientific and possibly bogus review from yours truly!

For the educational portion I tuned into seminars given by Lee Varis and Erin Manning.

The first seminar that I sat in on of Varis was one about 21st century lighting techniques. The seminar was about how with digital photography you’re able to do some very creative frame blending and channel shuffling to achieve the appearance of mixed lighting on an all white light lit set. Then he talked about how to build a shot by “Lighting in layers”. It was also great to hear him talk about his 30+ years in the commercial industry shooting movie posters.

After the Seminar I joined in on the cluster**** that was the photo shooting zones. Though the instructors were giving good insight to the lighting they were setting up, it seems that most participants were too busy scrambling to get a shot of the models to pay any attention.

Lastly I sat in on Erin Manning’s Shooting in Natural Light seminar. I was excited to hear from a seasoned photographer such as Manning who specializes in lifestyle work. The seminar was a nice buffer on the quality of light achievable at different times of day and how to cope with less than desirable lighting situations.

All in all I think it was a great event. I wasn’t sure what to expect considering the free entrance for early registers but I had fun and would definitely go again.

Last year, at 24 years old, Costanza was crowned the Tecate Light Miss Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. On Thursday, she will hand her crown over to the new winner of the modeling competition. Costanza spoke to Reign Media Group about her modeling career and what it’s like being back to pass the crown.

Reign Media Group: When did you realize that modeling is what you wanted to do
Stephani Costanza: I remember telling my parents when I was 13 years old that I was moving to L.A. because I knew deep down I was going to be somebody so I’ve always had modeling and being in the spotlight embedded in my heart. Last year is when I really knew modeling was going to be my full time job and dream come true, especially working as a special effects makeup artist.

RMG: How long have you been doing this professionally and how would you say you’ve changed since the beginning?
SC: I have been a professional signed model since October of last year. It has been such a drastic change. I have finally become the woman that I use to see and look up to on TV or ads. It’s definitely a more professional level of modeling and it’s more frightening and difficult, but at the end of the day I feel extremely accomplished.

RMG: What would you say has been your biggest career accomplishment thus far?
SC: Oh to have to choose?!  So far I would say working with Skechers for various commercials and print ads definitely was a great opportunity for me. The auditions are usually 400-500 people crammed in a studio and knowing that you were chosen out of that many hard working models is a pretty honorable feeling. Plus, it’s always rewarding when your family sees you on TV.

RMG: What was it like shooting an ad for Nike and competing in the Vegas top 100?
SC: It’s very surreal! You feel like all those hours spent at the gym are very worth it! Especially when you go back home to visit and everyone looks up to you and your name is recognized…it becomes so real. My parents are starting to feel it more than I am when they cant even go to the grocery store with out someone recognizing them as my mom and dad.

RMG: Tell me about your involvement with the Grand Prix and what your expectations for this year are.
SC: Well all year I was expected to be in front of the camera, taking interviews, making appearances, charity work, so this Thursday my involvement will be judging the Tecate Light Miss Toyota Grand Prix competition. My expectations are finding someone who can fill my shoes as the ambassador of Toyota Grand Prix. I’m looking for someone with beauty and a brain, someone who is confident, intelligent, and stands out from the crowd.

RMG: What was it like winning?
SC: Amazing. I had just gone through a rough break up and running (somewhat helped boost my confidence). I got my butt to the gym for four weeks, practiced my public speaking, watched my Sunday races and believed that I could do it no matter how crappy I was feeling. It was definitely rewarding.

RMG: What is it like to be back and see the other people competing for what you won just last year?
SC: It’s always nice to be on the other side of the rainbow! It was definitely a big eye opener to how much I’ve grown within the past year and where I am now. It’s really nice for once to be the one who’s not competing for a position considering that’s what I do on a day to day basis in my career. I’m definitely enjoying myself.

RMG: What’s been your favorite “look” to model and why?
SC: My favorite look is definitely swimwear. It’s at the beach and you can be fun, flirty and show your personality. It’s very raw and real. Plus you have to be a healthy weight. There’s less pressures and muscle tone is expectable and coming from a gymnast background…it helps in my case.

RMG: Who are some people or models already well known and established in the industry that you look up to and why?
SC: I look up to Sophia Vergara and Brooke Shields. They both started in modeling and swimwear and have always stuck to who they are as women. I have strong moral beliefs so I look for role models who stand by their own as well. Plus they both keep healthy weights and don’t fall into the celebrity standard.

RMG: What are three things you know now that you wish you knew when just starting out?
SC: Honestly, to just live life day to day with out worrying what tomorrow will bring. I was so obsessed with making it when I first moved to LA that I forgot to just breathe. When it’s your time, it’s your time.

1. In my case, not wasting my focus on a relationship.
2. It’s not only how good you are at your talent, but also who you know.
3. Dreams take time to develop, nothing happens over night.

#3. DEADMAU5 – Live at Ultra Music Festival

The first time I heard this set I wasn’t really into it until I heard the rest of the Ultra set and realized they all almost sounded the same. Deadmau5 had one of the handfull of set that not only stood out but stood out and was genuinely good! Heavy bass all around and his classics of course make the people go nuts and you can hear it when they scream every time he plays one.

#2. DJ Chuckie – DJ Sounds Show

Okay so this one is a bit different and I added to the list not because of the set itself but because of how he mentions how different areas of the world like different types of EDM and not only does he know that but he adjusts accordingly. A lot of DJs nowadays show up and play whatever they want to rather than reading the crowd, giving them what they want and give them a little something they’d never expect just to keep it interesting and it something he definitely does! A good mix of non mainstream music!

#3.  RL Grime b2b Baauer

Ahhhhhhh yeaaaa! I have to admit, when I first started to listen and still fast forwarded a bit and I understood what they were doing. It was different, different songs and maybe a style of music people weren’t expecting them to play  but I think that’s what made it so good! Caught my attention not only because it was at the boiler room but look at the names of the people performing, listen for yourself!

Grunge fashion began around the late 80s once hardcore punk, heavy metal, and indie rock became popular. This look was originally inspired by the different types of rock bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Black Flag, Led Zeppelin and many more from around that time.  This grungy style started fading away around the mid-late 90s because most of the well known grunge bands either broke up or became less visible. I really like this style of dress so I was determined to make some outfits for myself and this is what I got!

Looking pretty in front of a camera can be easy but finding a model who can Move around and make it look effortless, that can be hard to find. It is important that the model gets used to being in front of a camera and isnt afraid to let go and have fun!

Avoid getting stuck on the same pose for more than a few seconds, keep on moving. You can slightly change your pose by moving your shoulders, lifting your neck or by repositioning your arms and legs. 

When posing it is important to pose from head to toe!. Yes, this includes your hands as well! so many models often forget to make their hands look graceful. Making sure they are relaxed and not clenched makes a huge difference! When setting your hands on your hips , try to make your hands look as relaxed as possible.

Be Asymetrical! for a more interesting shot, make sure that you’re doing something different with each side of your body. Being asymmetrical can be as simple as dipping one shoulder or hip and making sure that you are making different angels with your body. This makes for a more interesting photo.

Know which direction the light is coming from. Remember that light will cast shadows, and even if they are slight, they will affect the appearance of your face. It is important that you are aware of light placements in the studio or become aware of the natural light around you.

Learn what angels flatter your face the most. Everyone has flaws even the best models out there are not perfect, but its about practicing and learning which angels flatter your face the best. You should know which poses work for you, and which don’t. Learn which poses flatter which parts of your body.

Listening to your photographer. A good photographer will give you feedback and offer ideas. It is important that you can communicate and understand what is expected of you. Visualizing or taking the part of that persona you are trying to imitate may help you capture the emotion that you need for a shot.

You don’t always have to  look at the camera. You can stare off into the distance, slightly away from the camera. In fact its best if you offer variety and do look away! But, when you do look at the camera make sure you are connecting to the camera through your eyes. Try to avoid pointing your nose directly to the camera..sounds silly but unless you are going for a dramatic look its best to angle your face.

Study. Always know what type of shoot you are doing Glamour, Fashion and commercial all call for different types of poses and looks. Always walk on set confident and educated on what is expected of you.
