Every year thousands of talented makeup artists send their submissions to the Annual International Make Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) competition. Only 8 artist are chosen to compete in the “Battle of the Brushes Student Competition” where prizes include being featured in the Make Up Artist Magazine, cash prizes, and a one year sponsorship from Make-Up Artist Magazine. The sold-out trade show took place at the Pasadena Convention Center on January 19th and 20th. Every year,  8 aspiring make up artist compete in two different competitions, the Beauty/Fantasy competition and the Character/Prosthetics competition.

This year, Make-Up Artist Carmen Marie represented the Make Up Designory School and competed in the Beauty/ Fantasy competition on Saturday Morning. This year’s theme was “The Elements,”  where each student had to base their creation on an element and were given two hours to do hair, makeup, and wardrobe. I was honored to be a part of this competition as Carmen’s model representing the earth element. Prior to the competition, Carmen and I were able to prepare by going over makeup, practicing hair, and doing fittings to ensure that we were prepared.

After  hours of hard work, the models were sent to a room filled with judges who carefully studied and graded each of us.

We were then sent out to the runway to show the audience the final piece!

The Ultimate IMATS Experience was unbelievable. I was fortunate enough to perform in front of a sold out show with over 10,000 people in the audience. It was an honor to be surrounded by some of the best make up artists from around the world. I even met some very important Make up Artist in the Industry such as Howard Burger and Glenn Hetrick to name a few.
